about acoustical systems
Acoustical Systems was founded in 1998 by Axinia Schäfer as a small family enterprise, with veteran analog designer Dietrich Brakemeier serving as chief design engineer. The company built its reputation on the engineering precision of vinyl playback geometry, treating tonearm bearing design and alignment as the core problems to solve rather than peripheral details. The product line centers on tonearms: the 12-inch AXIOM reference arm and the 10-inch AQUILAR derived from it, both built around adjustable geometry and high-tolerance bearing assemblies. The catalog extends into cartridges, the SMARTractor alignment protractor that became a widely-referenced setup tool across the analog community, and complete turntable and accessory pieces aimed at the high-end vinyl tier. In the analog specialist market Acoustical Systems competes with German and European arm makers such as Kuzma, Reed, and SME at the reference price points. The AXIOM and AQUILAR have both been reviewed in Stereophile's Analog Corner — the AXIOM in Analog Corner #325 — and in Positive Feedback, giving the brand the named-press record US dealers look for before committing floor space to a high-ticket analog line. North American distribution is handled by Rutherford Audio. Design and manufacturing are based in Hofstetten, Germany.
