EMT traces to Elektromesstechnik Wilhelm Franz, founded in Berlin in 1938 to build measurement and broadcast-audio gear. Its turntables and pickups became the de facto standard in European radio studios through the postwar decades; the EMT 927 and 930 idler decks and the TSD 15 cartridge are touchstones of professional vinyl playback. The current operation, EMT Tontechnik, is run under HiFiction AG and continues the line as a hand-built audiophile brand. The catalog centers on broadcast-derived turntables and the cartridges that made the name. The 928 II is the flagship integrated turntable; the 909-HI is a more recent statement deck. Cartridges run from the moving-coil TSD 15 and JSD series to the OFD and HSD bodies, several still using the distinctive spherical and fineline profiles developed for studio use. Phono stages and accessories round out the range. In the US market EMT sits at the cost-no-object end of analog playback, named alongside other heritage cartridge and turntable makers serious dealers stock. Distribution runs through MoFi Distribution, with retail via Music Direct and Resolution Audio in New York. Recent gear has been reviewed in Stereophile, HiFi+, and Tracking Angle, including coverage of the 928 II and 909-HI. Production is in Turbenthal, Switzerland, near Zurich, where the company moved in 2019 into a restored 1833 spinning mill. Cartridges and turntables are assembled and tested by hand on site.
