about onix hi-end
Onix is a British amplifier brand that began in Brighton in 1979, when founder Tony Brady started designing power amplifiers in a workspace near Brighton Pier. The first classic integrated models, the OA20 and OA21, launched in the early 1980s and built the brand's reputation: compact chassis, surprising drive into real loudspeaker loads, and the black-and-gold cosmetic identity the brand still uses. The OA-21 in particular — with its upgradable pre-amp sub-board and MM/MC phono options — became the brand's signature product and is still produced and supported. Over the following decade Onix moved into more than thirty export markets including Germany, the US, Singapore, and Japan. The brand is now Taiwan- and Asia-led in ownership and production, carrying the heritage amplifier line forward while extending into a broader range of electronics under the Onix and OA21 names. Onix sits in the recognizable-to-dealers tier rather than the McIntosh household tier: a heritage British name with a long review trail, competing in the affordable-integrated conversation against Rega, Creek, and Cambridge Audio. In the US it is sold through Music Direct and Audio Advisor. Named-press coverage spans HiFi+, 6moons, Audioholics, SoundStage!, and HiFi Pig across both the heritage and current ranges. The brand traces its origin to Brighton, England; current production is Asia-based under its present ownership.
