about onkyo
Onkyo traces to 1946 in Osaka, Japan, founded by Takeshi Godai as Osaka Denki Onkyo K.K. The name translates roughly as sound harmony, and the company spent the postwar decades building a reputation in receivers, amplifiers, and speakers across both the mainstream and enthusiast markets. After a financial restructuring, the Onkyo and Integra brands were acquired in 2021 by Premium Audio Company, a subsidiary of Gentex, which now owns and distributes the brand in the United States from Indianapolis, Indiana. The current line spans AV receivers, including the TX-RZ30, and the Icon Series of two-channel electronics built for the hi-fi listener: the A-50 integrated amplifier and the M-80 monoblock and P-80 preamplifier separates. The catalog reaches from affordable home-theater receivers up into dedicated stereo components. In the US market Onkyo competes with the established AV and integrated-amplifier names like Yamaha, Denon, and Marantz, positioned as a long-recognized mainstream-to-enthusiast brand rather than a boutique. US distribution and support run through Premium Audio Company in Indianapolis, and the brand's CES 2026 showcase confirms an active US presence. The press record includes Stereophile coverage of the Icon Series A-50 and The Absolute Sound reviews of the Icon M-80, P-80, and the TX-RZ30 receiver, making it a name any US dealer recognizes on sight. Product development is rooted in Japan with US operations run from Indianapolis.
