Founded in 1970 by William Z. Johnson, Audio Research almost single-handedly revived vacuum-tube amplification at a time when the entire industry had abandoned it for solid-state designs. The 1973 SP-3 preamplifier was declared the finest available by both Stereophile and The Absolute Sound, cementing the company's reputation. Their Reference Series, launched in 1995, remains one of the most acclaimed lines in high-end audio.
