Founded in 1977 by Dieter Burmester, who built the first 777 preamplifier from parts salvaged from medical equipment in his Berlin engineering office. By 1980 the company had introduced the world's first modular preamplifier, the 808. Burmester's distinctive chrome-and-steel industrial aesthetic is so iconic that a piece entered MoMA's permanent collection, and all products continue to be assembled by hand in Berlin-Schöneberg.
