about canton
Canton was founded in 1972 in Weilrod, in the Taunus hills outside Frankfurt, by Hubert Milbers, Otfried Tielsch, Wolfgang Seikritt, and Otto Olbermann. The name is a contraction of "Cantare" (to sing) and "Ton" (sound), and the company has remained at the same Hessian site for over five decades, where it operates one of the largest dedicated loudspeaker development and production facilities in Europe. The catalog spans nine series, anchored at the top by the Reference line. The Reference 7K, Reference 5K, Reference 3K, and Reference 2K replace the long-running Reference K-series with redesigned aluminum-ceramic-tungsten (ACT 3.0) drivers, in-house wave-surround tweeters, and CNC-machined aluminum cabinets on the larger models. Below Reference sit the Vento, Chrono, GLE, and Townus floorstanding and bookshelf families, the A-Series active towers with onboard amplification and room correction, and the Smart Series wireless multiroom system. Canton also manufactures dedicated home-theater subwoofers (Reference Sub, Smart Sub) and on-wall LCR speakers for integrators. US and Canadian distribution moved to Bluebird Music (Toronto) in December 2020, ending the prior direct-import arrangement and giving Canton a proper dealer network across North America for the first time in years. Stereophile placed the Reference 7K in Class A of its Recommended Components list and has published full reviews of the Reference 3.2 DC, Reference 5, and Reference 7K; Michael Lavorgna's Twittering Machines and other US press have covered the Vento and A-Series. In the German market Canton competes directly with Elac, Heco, Magnat, and Quadral; at the Reference tier the comparison set widens to Dynaudio Confidence, KEF Reference, and Focal Sopra. Cabinet work, driver assembly, and final QC all happen at Weilrod. Canton exhibits annually at HIGH END Munich and returns to HIGH END Vienna 2026.
