about joachim gerhard
Joachim Gerhard is a German loudspeaker designer with more than fifty years at the bench, best known as the founder of Audio Physic and later Sonics and Suesskind Audio, and as the designer behind speakers such as the Audio Physic Virgo. The Joachim Gerhard Collection is his current eponymous line, built in cooperation with Markus Grelka of Rose-Handwerk, a master of wood craft and cabinetry, both based in the Sauerland region. The Collection is a boutique relaunch under his own name, offering hand-built floorstanding and standmount loudspeakers that pair Gerhard's driver and crossover design with Rose-Handwerk's wood cabinetry. Models include the Vitesse and the Surveyor, the latter built around Purifi-based drivers, with the emphasis on small-series, made-to-order construction rather than a broad production catalog. Gerhard's reviewed history runs deep: Stereophile has covered his designs across the Audio Physic and Sonics eras, including the Virgo, Anima, Allegra, and Amerigo. US distribution has long run through Immedia and Allen Perkins, who carried Gerhard's earlier brands. The current Collection competes in the same conversation as other German boutique makers and Gerhard's own design lineage, though as a fresh eponymous relaunch it sits at a medium rather than a fully established market position. The speakers are hand-built in Germany's Sauerland region.
