about kharma
Kharma is a Dutch high-end manufacturer founded by Charles van Oosterum, whose company began as a loudspeaker workshop in the early 1980s; the Kharma brand was established in 1993. The work is known for exotic driver and cabinet materials, including ceramic and diamond diaphragms and composite enclosures, pursued in pursuit of low coloration. The loudspeaker line is organized into tiers. The Ceramique series sits at the accessible end, the Elegance series in the middle, and the Exquisite series at the cost-no-object top, with models such as the Elegance dB and the larger Exquisite reference systems. Kharma also produces cables and electronics as part of a complete-system approach, though loudspeakers remain the core of the brand's reputation. Kharma is a serious-dealer name in the US, reviewed over the years in Stereophile and The Absolute Sound. It was historically distributed in the US by Great Expectations, and an established US dealer presence remains, with retailers such as Musical Artisans and listings across the enthusiast channels. It competes at the high end against the other European cost-no-object loudspeaker houses. Production is in Breda, Netherlands, where the loudspeakers are built and finished by hand.
