Linn Products was founded in 1973 by Ivor Tiefenbrun in Glasgow, Scotland, on a single contrarian thesis that has defined the company ever since: the source matters most. The Linn Sondek LP12 turntable, launched in 1972 and continuously evolved for more than five decades, is the longest-running high-end audio product in production and the clearest expression of that philosophy — a fully upgradeable suspended-subchassis design where a customer's original deck can be brought to current specification through Karousel bearing, Kore/Keel subchassis, Radikal power supply, and Urika phono stages rather than replaced. That upgrade-not-replace model is the commercial heart of the brand and a natural fit for a dealer doing daily trade-ins.
What Definitive carries
The line Definitive trades every day spans the modern Linn catalog top to bottom. The Klimax line is the reference tier — the Klimax DSM network player/streaming preamplifier built around Linn's Organik DAC architecture, and Klimax Solo/Twin power amplifiers. Selekt DSM is the configurable middle that does the most retail volume: a modular streaming hub with optional integrated amplification and user-upgradeable Organik DAC cards, so a system grows with the customer. Majik anchors the entry into the Linn ecosystem. Across all of them Linn's Space Optimisation software measurement-corrects the speakers for the actual room — a setup step that, like Wilson's driver alignment, ties the in-room result to the dealer's expertise. Active-system configurations (Linn driving each driver with its own dedicated amplifier and digital crossover) remain a Linn signature few competitors offer.
Where it sits in the room
In the streaming-source and digital-front-end conversation Linn sits alongside Naim, dCS, Aurender, and Auralic, distinguished by the LP12 analog lineage, the Organik R-2R-style DAC developed entirely in-house, and Space Optimisation. For Definitive Portland it is the high-frequency, repeat-business backbone: a brand the staff already trade daily Seattle-side, with an installed base and an upgrade ladder that turns a first sale into a multi-year customer relationship.
