Founded in 1946 by Alastair Robertson-Aikman as The Scale Model Equipment Company, SME pivoted to audio in 1959 after Robertson-Aikman built a tonearm for his own use that drew immediate commercial interest. Manufactured entirely in Steyning, West Sussex, SME's tonearm headshell mount became the global industry standard detachable interface. Their lineup ranges from the entry Model 12A to the flagship Model 60 turntable, all machined to aerospace-grade tolerances.
